The Iranian Society of Queensland (ISQ) has become a highly active centre for cultural and social activities and is well known for delivering popular and engaging events and festivals in Brisbane. This year, ISQLD celebrated the annual Persian Yalda festival and Christmas together at Brisbane multicultural center on 22/12/2018 with over 242 participants. The event titled ‘Yalda Meets Christmas’ and it was held in collaboration with MDA, Romero center, Refugees Welcome Australia and Brisbane City council.
Yalda is a cultural festival celebrated on the longest night of each year (winter solstice in the northern hemisphere), which falls on the 21st of December. ‘Yalda Meets Christmas’ provided the ideal setting for sharing our most significant cultural celebrations between the Iranian community and the wider Brisbane public. One of the main achievement was to strengthen cross-cultural bonds and to encourage a sense of belonging for new Queenslanders from CALD background. ‘Yalda Meets Christmas’ united our community members, the Queensland public, new migrants, and asylum seekers in this celebration of our shared values of peace, love, joy and prosperity.
